Vertigo: Clearing the Confusion

Updated: Sep 24, 2021

Vertigo is nothing but a dizziness experienced by a person when s/he moves suddenly. Other symptoms include headache, Nausea, vomiting along with the dizzy spell.

Generally, it so happens that people consult the ENT Doctor if they experience any such discomfort because vertigo is associated with Ear Fluid Imbalance. The ENT doctor gives a medication which the person takes for many years but still doesn't get rid of the dizziness problem. The person has now made it a part of his life. He cannot imagine his life without it.

Experiencing Dizziness is a symptom of Vertigo

Well I'm here to tell you that it is a problem with a real solution. You just haven't found it yet. A task, which I'm sure you will accomplish after reading this post. And that is because the most common hindrance in providing a treatment for vertigo is misdiagnosis!

The vertigo or dizziness that one suffers from is generally of two types. Both of them have different causes and different approach to treatment. The two types of Vertigo are:

  1. Type 1: Dizziness where the world around the person seems unstable

  2. Type 2: Dizziness where the person himself seems unstable

The Type 1 Vertigo, where the world around seems shaky, is caused by Ear fluid Imbalance. This is a condition caused when a person goes through a sudden Jerky movement, head injury, Ear infection or even motion sickness. Ear fluid will remain imbalanced unless reverted back to normal state by physical therapy.

Generally people visit the ENT specialist for treatment of Vertigo

Lets say a kid jumps weirdly while playing. His ear fluid gets imbalanced right away. He will start having Vertigo from that point in time and will continue to have it regularly until he is an old man. And that is not counting the medications that he is taking for 80 long years! This will be the case if the condition is misdiagnosed as in most cases, it is.

The treatment for Ear fluid Imbalance will be done by a physical or manual therapist as there is no medication that can be taken to revert the ear fluid in its original state.

Now let's talk about the Type 2 Vertigo, where the person himself seems to be moving and unstable. It is caused by cervical problems and incorrect posture. The forward head posture, say when a person is reading or working on a computer with head bent, causes this type of vertigo. It results in tight or rigid muscles in the neck area starting just below the ear till the chin.

Students and Working professionals with bad posture face the problem of Vertigo

The treatment for cervical and posture is again the field of a physiotherapist and not an ENT doctor. They will re-align your backbone so the nerves compressed by the wrong shape of the spine are released. It is the main cause of Type 2 vertigo.

One can actually take medicines for dizziness. As most of us do! But, any amount of medicine taken to stop the dizzy spells will not work because the problem is entirely different. Until and unless the root cause of the problem is not identified and treated accordingly, it is of no use whatsoever. The treatment of vertigo - both type 1 and type 2 is a physical therapy problem and if you experience any of the symptoms, it is advisable to visit your Physiotherapist for absolute relief.

Both types of Vertigo is only treated by a Physical Therapist
